On the 8th of February, early Wednesday morning, the majority of TY were on a bus ready to go to Cork. I wasn't looking forward to the three hour trip, so I had quite a few naps. At ten o'clock we arrived at Fota Wildlife park and I wasn't that excited . I am not an animal lover so spending the day looking at wild animals and knowing some were free roaming did not excite me.
We were split into groups and we played a game like Chinese whispers, where we had to describe an animal and the builder had to build it. My team won. We then played sheepdog. We formed teams and chose a shepherd the rest of us were blindfolded and had to listen for the commands as the shepherd wasn't allowed to talk. It was very confusing and our team came last.
We were then split into our class groups which I wasn't that happy about as I spend everyday with them so it would've been nice to stay mixed. Our instructor brought us to see the giraffes which I really liked she showed us the kitchen where all the food is made. we got to look into the freezers and see all the fruit + veg and the meat including dead chickens.
We were told loads of facts about the animals. Some were surprising and very interesting. There was a form of rodent that was walking around, which looked unusual. I learnt that cheetahs only move unless necessary and that they are lazy animals. I saw an orange panda in a tree but its actually not related to the pandas just the same name.
While walking to the canteen I came across some monkeys by the water, I enjoyed hearing about them as I did a science project as to why monkeys eat bananas . Before going in for lunch their was a few birds by the door and one peacock. I hate birds so seeing a massive peacock while eating my lunch was not a delightful sight.
After lunch, we got to see the monkeys swinging around and doing their call. It was really loud and can be heard from 3km away. It was really funny and entertaining. The penguins were a let down as they just stood their and weren't exciting. I think Madagascar set my expectations too high. When it began raining we went to a room with reptiles in it. I was scared as I hate butterflies. I loved looking at the lions and tigers I found them quite fascinating. I was shocked when she said a bison can be as tall as 6 foot and 3 metres wide.
At the very end we were given a talk about wildlife in Ireland. They had stuffed animals on display. I was creeped out as the animals were once alive. When the instructor was showing them she sensed my fear and moved it really close to my face and I screamed.
Overall I really enjoyed Fota and would love to go again.
